Schloss Bruchsal. A view of the beautiful residence in Bruchsal, Germany, once visited by the choir

Sad news from Bruchsal

About Jul 30, 2025

Some choristers and Friends of Cwmbran Baroque Singers will remember fondly the concerts by Cwmbran Baroque Singers and Kammerchor Bruchsal (Bruchsal Chamber Choir) during the 1980s, as part of the strong twinning that existed between Cwmbran and Bruchsal in Germany. Walter Bacher from the choir has been in touch to say that their conductor at that time, Martin Schirrmeister, has died suddenly.

An article about Martin on the Kammerchor's website has more information - it can be read in English or German.

A condolence card has been sent to the Kammerchor on behalf of Cwmbran Baroque Singers.

Cwmbran Baroque Singers President Alan Moore writes: Very sad news. My wife and I knew Martyn well and stayed with him and his family when we were in Bruchsal. He was a committed musician and enjoyed the time we all spent together. Of course our most memorable occasion was when we sang Haydn’s Seasons with the  Bruchsal choir. I think the whole town came and it stays in my memory to this day. Martyn was very glad of our support on that occasion and we all thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Music does enable you to have wonderful experiences and memories of the past and we do remember Martyn fondly . I am sure he will be missed.

At our Christmas concert, Cwmbran Baroque Singers will have an opportunity to pay tribute to Martin and his contribution to the successful collaboration of our two choirs.

We remember our friends from the Kammerchor and Martin’s friends and family at this sad time.
