Brahms German Requiem
The choir's most recent concert was a performance of Brahms' Ein deutsches Requiem and of David Martyn Jones's new setting of Psalm 98 in St John the Baptist Church on 5th April.
Musical Director Carol Williams rehearsed and conducted the Requiem, Faure's Cantique de Jean Racine and Mendelssohn's Verleih uns Frieden. Martyn Jones conducted his own new composition, Sing to the Lord. Two beautiful young singers, Lowri Probert and Simon Pratt, were the soloists. The Orchestra De Cymru performed with and accompanied the choir, as they have done so often before. It was joy to sing with their wonderful playing. Choir's own Gaynor Smith played the organ accompaniment, and Bethan Cole the harp.
For the choir this concert was intended as a 90th birthday tribute to Choir President and former Musical Director, Alan Moore. The Requiem is one of his favourite pieces of music. It was also a wonderful experience to sing such great music. For listeners, as one appreciative member of the audience wrote,
From the first bass entry in 'Cantique', it was clear that this was going to be a first class performance, and so it was.
