Canon Colin Westbrook

We have been saddened to learn of the passing of Canon Colin Westbrook of St John the Baptist Church in Risca Road, Newport. Some years ago, when Cwmbran Baroque Singers found themselves unexpectedly without a regular venue in which to perform, Canon Westbrook welcomed us to the magnificent, roomy church with its resonant acoustic, which we have come to regard as the regular base for the Christmas and Spring concerts.

Canon Westbrook loved music, especially classical instrumental and choral music, and he became a familiar figure, slipping in to hear us rehearse before a performance, or to appreciate parts of the concert itself. He continued to do so, even when his health and mobility made this increasingly difficult.

Not only Cwmbran Baroque Singers but also many other choirs and instrumental ensembles in the Newport and Torfaen area must be grateful for the encouragement he gave to the musical life of greater Gwent.
